Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.08.35 AMVerifone’s inaugural Appathon kicked off in Redwood City on August 3 at GSVLabs. Over 2 days, participating developers worked together to come up with customer and merchant apps that can be used on Verifone Devices to transform the point of sale.

As with other consumer touch points, the POS is changing and adapting as newer technologies become available. These new devices leverage the power of a flexible, open architecture to deliver high-impact, interactive experiences.

The event started off with Verifone’s VP of Commerce Enablement and Mobility Product, Hitesh Anand, welcoming 50 plus attendees to the first of a series appathons focusing on commerce and POS. Anand was followed by Michelle Tinsley, Director of Mobile and Secure Payments at Intel, and Antti Rautiainen, Verfione’s Director of Commerce Development, who offered up some tips to developers and wished them luck in the coming two days. With that, the attendees hit the ground running and started coding.

Teams of developers worked together to come up with ideas on how to #HackThePOS

As an extra incentive to get the creative juices flowing, a twitter challenge was presented to the attendees: Share how 3rd-Party apps are changing the point of sale. Responses were placed in a raffle for an Oculus Rift and randomly chosen.

A second opportunity

at a prize was presented the second day through a competition on who can come up with the most creative selfie with the payment device. The winner of this challenge would go home with an iWatch.

By the end of the event, the teams privately demoed their apps to a group of Verfione developers who then moved them onto the next round of development. Once all is said and done, three grand prize winners will be selected to showcase their app at Money20/20 in Las Vegas and get it published in Verifone’s App Marketplace.
